Second Airport Shuttle a Success

July 17, 2007 - The second trial run of Student Government’s new Airport Shuttle
was a success, expanding service from every two hours to every hour and a half to better
accommodate students. View results of a recent survey of those who signed up, here.
Last quarter’s Shuttle Survey results can be found here.
Over three hundred students signed up for the shuttle but none were left behind, despite
several wait listed students and many bags from students leaving for the summer. We’d
like to specially thank all the Student Government volunteers who came out and help
make this happen, along with the University’s provided drivers who were incredibly
courteous and helpful to students with heavy bag loads.

College Receives One Hundred Million Dollar Donation to Undergraduate Aid

I would like to thank the generous anonymous donor on behalf of all of Student Government for
his incredible gift to undergraduate education. It is through this is of gift that we will be
able to see the life of the mind live on and flourish in the years to come. We would also like
to thank the Student Government members and students who have advocated strongly for this type
of aid over the years. Our voice has finally been heard, and we are thankful that future students
will not have to bear the financial burden that has been an unfortunate requirement of the life
of the mind. Finally, we can say with confidence that our University is leading the way in meeting
the needs of undergraduates students.

BigIdeas = Big Money for You
Student Government is rewarding students with
gift certificates to Chicago stores and restaurants and other prizes in exchange for good ideas to
improve life on campus. Sometimes BigIdeas aren’t really that ‘big’ at all. Examples of BigIdeas
previously implemented include: 1. Set up a camera inside the Reynolds Club to monitor when
busses arrive; 2. Add “Raw Sugar” to the condiments available in the C-Shop; 3. Install a machine
to add money to Graduate Laundry Cards in the basement of the Reynolds Club. Student provide the
ideas, and Student Government will work to make that idea a reality. To find out more, please

that there could be an increase in the dialog between the Board and students in the coming year
through his committee.

Decision Coke

May 31, 2007 - The Campus Dining Advisory Board (CDAB) decided with a vote of 4-2 to keep
Coca-Cola products in the University of Chicago Campus Dining locations. The issue of whether or
not to remove Coca-cola products from Campus Dining locations has been debated on campus for the
past 2 years and culminated in town hall meeting on this subject on Tuesday, May 22nd, which was
attended by over 200 students. National representatives from both the Campaign to Stop Killer Coke
and Coca-Cola North America spoke at this forum to address questions about alleged human rights
violations and other topics. This issue has been debated within both Student Government (SG) as
well as the Inter-House Council (IHC) and by the end of Spring Quarter 2007 both of these
councils voted to keep Coca-Cola products on campus. Both SG and IHC have 3 representatives on
CDAB, which constitute the 6 voting members of the committee.

Annual Allocations
$270,000 in student activities fees allocated in 5 days

May 7, 2007 - The Annual Allocations Committee met for more than forty hours during sixth week to allocate $270,000 of the student activities fee for next year. The amount of requests increased dramatically, while the student activities fee did not and consequently the committee had to make many difficult decisions. While not all events could be funded in full, there will be many great events next year put on by political, cultural, academic and many other RSOs. Whether its moon festivals, or Bollywood movies, next year’s student activities programming will be fantastic!

Crerar
Negotiations on late-night study space have begun

May 5, 2007 - Library administrators met with outgoing and incoming members of the
SG Executive Committee to discuss problems with the location of the All-Night Study Space (ANSS).
Since the ANSS was moved from the A-Level of the Reg to Crerar, student attendance has dropped
significantly; this change was made to clear space for books during a massive construction project
planned for the Reg. At the meeting, library admin solicited input from SG regarding why attendance
is down at Crerar and asked what could be done to improve the service until the A-Level of the Reg
can be restored in 2010. SG members will meet with admin again to present a list of suggestions in
8th week. In the coming discussions, SG’s primary goal is to restore the A-Level study space as
soon as possible. To voice your opinion on the matter, please contact David Courchaine at

daveyboy@uchicago.edu.

CTA
Results of the U-Pass vote

April 27, 2007 - During the last student government elections, voters answered a question on whether they would like to see an unlimited ride CTA pass (”U-Pass”) implemented. The results in the College were 52% in favor, 48% against. In the GSB, 60% were in favor. In the SSA, 89% were in favor. In the Harris school, 80% were in favor. The U-Pass only failed (with less than 50% of the vote) in three graduate divisions: Physical Sciences, Divinity (49% to 51%) and Social Sciences (49% to 51%). Student government will be taking these results to the individual divisions for further action.

Students to decide the fate of Coke on campus
Administrators in charge of dining
on campus told six student representatives on the Campus Dining Advisory Board (CDAB) that they can
decide whether or not Coca-Cola products should be removed from campus dining halls. This development
occurred after representatives from the “Killer Coke” campaign presented CDAB with approximately 1100
signatures from students who agree that Coke should be removed. The student representatives reported
that Richard Mason, the lead administrator for CDAB, indicated to them that if the six students on
the Board unanimously agreed to remove Coke, it would be done. CDAB advises the administration
regarding Bartlett, Pierce, BJ, Hutch, C-Shop, Maroon Market, and Capone’s. The six student
representatives include three reps from Student Government and three reps from the Inter-House Council.
CDAB will meet again to decide this question in 6th week. To find out who your SG reps are on CDAB,
please click here.
