Per class students: Can a CTA Fare Machine be bought with this money?
Comment by Jarrod WOlf — January 29, 2008 @ 5:48 pm
Write a proposal! I thought there was a long line and it was way more then $60,000…

We have been in line for a CTA fare machine forever (via a request through the University’s transportation office) and writing a grant proposal will not advance our place in line- this is a CTA matter, not a University issue. It seems other citizens of Chicago have no problem planning ahead and refilling their transit cards when they are at a train station or by simply using a Chicago Card Plus. CTA fare machines are available not only at the green and red line garfield stops but also at the Museum of Science and Industry.

So it seems like a proposal wouldn’t do so well, given the line…

Can we have an evening bus service from Gleacher center to Metra station at 9pm. A lot of students use Metra and this would be really appreciated.
I think Kellogg provide such a service to its students

Would you vote to fund my purchase of a BMW if I gave free rides to all the committee members?

To answer two questions:
- The extra bus service is actually in the works, I will make sure to post something about it when we get the minutes from the last Transportation Student Advisory Board meeting. The talk is to revamp the 173 to provide such a service.
- I hate to say it, but a BMW is a little too pricey for this fund. Maybe try Annual Allocations? ;)

Disclaimer: neither of these bodies would ever fund anything which personally benefits a single student, nor would they ever take bribes.

Would you guys fund a student film with about 25 people working on it? Fire Escape doesn’t cover most of the costs.

That really depends on the application.
We’ll be posting some key questions that the committee will ask of every application. One of these is how many students does it affect.
A very expensive thing should affect a lot of student’s lives.
Another question is whether there is why the uncommon fund. Are there other grants or pools of money (Fire escape, sgfc, fota) that you could apply for? Why do you NEED the Uncommon Fund?

Can I apply for a labtop? I dont have one but it will make my student life on campus better. Or is this grant just for clubs and stuff.

You can apply for anything. But I think it’d be hard for you to make a case for why ~$1,000 of student money should only go to a single student…
[to break down the math, $1,000 is 1/60th of the fund and you are only 1/14,000 of the student body, not a really fair distribution of funds]
Try to think bigger picture. What’s something that could be purchased for campus which would help more students? Maybe we could have laptops to rent or borrow? Just an idea, you’d need to work out the how.

How long do you have to use the money you receive from the Uncommon Fund?
Comment by Anonymous — February 7, 2008 @ 3:32 pm
The funds will be available through next fall quarter.
There is one caveat and that is one of the criteria proposals will be capability. So if you want to spend money next year you need to demonstrate that the people and institution will be around and able in a year’s time.

1. When is the exact deadline for submission?
There are conficting listings as to when the deadline for submission is. On this website it says Midnight Feb. 18, which I presume is on Monday Feb 18th, rather than Sunday evening; then, on the application is says by “Noon on February 18th at midnight”, which is very confusing.
2. Can one student submit the application with one student ID listed? Or, are more needed to be listed on it (since there are 2 Student ID lines listed)?
What description of “all known and possible sources of funding” is sought? This could be a very, very long list, given that any person or organization can be a “possible source” of funding.
3. Doesn’t Question #2 of the application overlap with the second part of Question #6. Why do we need to restate what the proposal is again (when talking about the enhancement of student life)? Wouldn’t this be covered in the detailed narrative, or should it be a separate statement?

1. It is on Monday Feb 18th at 11:59 PM. Sorry for the confusion.
2. Yes, one student can submit. More listed students (or more listed people) show more support for project.
For funding, if you have an incredibly exhausted list, try to give as much of an overview as possible. More fund raising demonstrates more commitment to your project.
3. Question 6 should reference your proposal but go into more detail how specifically it is different, perhaps drawing comparisons to what has been done or attempted before. Question 2 is more a specific outline of your proposal, question 6 gives you a chance to address the big picture questions the committee will ask about how your proposal fits inside of student life.
Even if your outline (Question 2) is still being formed, it is imperative you answer Question 6 or the why your project should be funded.

PS try looking at the past applications:
