This money was already allocated for the year. The Student Activities fee isn't given back at the end of the year if it isn't spent. SGFC works with the requests it receives, because Scav receives no student activities fee and because there were less requests this year the committee decided it should allocate this money.

But I understand where you guy's are coming from, "You should get involved" isn't meant to be an excuse but rather a call to action if you're aggrieved. I'm sorry you feel like SG let you down.

Often in the world of student activities, money is allocated towards things that some students might feel is frivolous. SG has to make sure it looks less at the content of an event (say the politics of a speaker) and look more at the nature of the request. As I said before, Scav isn't something we've ever funded. And this year it seemed like the exception was warranted. But I understand if you disagree, and I'm sorry we let you down.

As somebody who probably knows more about everybody who is commenting here than SGFC (well, maybe Scott knows as much as I do, haha), I'd like to pipe in on this discussion.

First off, the money from SGFC should not be rolled over. It was paid by students this year for activities this year, and using it for activities next year is not giving them the full benefit of their dollars. Also, at this point, the student activities fee had already been increased for next year. Saving 4,000 some odd dollars would not have helped. It would have been given to something before the year was up.

While Scott is somewhat right, we did not just fund this because we had extra money. We felt it was a good use of money we had, which is a criteria we use when deciding to fund any event. It helped that we had more money so we didn't have to feel like it was taking away from other programming on campus, but it was not the sole reason.

I believe that we felt that this money would provide something for Scav Hunt that even though few people would directly participate in, many would indirectly benefit. Many people are invovlved in Scav every year, and this is a program which has the potential of being continued. They do not intend to come back to SGFC for funding for this type of event again, what we gave them was to get this event started. Scav also doesn't typically get money from SGFC or AnnAl which is another point in their favor. They needed a boost and we were happy to provide it.

I also agree with Scott. If you care, do get involved. SGFC is a huge (huge huge) time commitment, and these people that make up this committee have been sitting every single week looking at budgets and making funding decisions. Maybe some of you disagree with this one decision, but these people have a lot more experience in doing this than you do. And just because you disagree with an event doesn't mean it doesn't have the right to get funded.

Don't try to pass it off as "if you care so much, get involved." The spending of this money was irresponsible.

Do you not see people complain about increases in tuition every year, and increases in the student activities fee? This money could have been rolled over potentially resulting in a smaller increase in student activities fee for the next year.

SGFC does fund activities by sitting down and asking "What's the best use of the Student Activities Fee?" and then funding programs from there. It works by trying to meet student needs. Because there was less student need this year, SGFC was able to use some of the extra resources on something a little bit different.

If you're upset about how SGFC is run you should get involved and make a change.

Simply because there are funds left over for the year in no way means that the money could not have been used for other programs. To say that there is still money left and as such there is no harm done is the same as saying "let's toss $4,686.97 in the dumpster, but only if we still have money left over afterwards, so it won't be a bad thing." That is perhaps the most simple minded argument you could have come up with.

SGFC operates on the basis of guidelines. These are not strict guidelines, but SGFC does tend to hold to them with some exceptions.

For example, SGFC provided funds to fly a team to the World Champion Debate Tournament a few years ago. Normally Debate would need to get funds from the Coalition of Academic Teams, but in this case SGFC made an exception because CAT would have come up short.

(Not trying to equate World Debate Tournament with Scav, just using it to show that there are exceptions)

If you want the Guidelines changed, talk to your elected representative. They just need to pass the Assembly by a simple majority.

On what basis did SGFC provide funding for scav? I was told there was a strict rule against paying travel costs for students for anything that does not bring a 'tangible benefit' to UChicago. No doubt the Scav hunt has many benefits for campus, but none would seem to fit the criterion presented by SGFC guidelines. How does SGFC justify this exorbitant grant?
