Student Government will be hosting another Presidential Discussion, probably the last one of the year. Register for a spot by using the following form. You will only be considered if you fill out the form!
Students will be selected on the basis of their division and whether they have tried to attend one of these in the past. In the discussion on April 16th, all graduate students and all students who had tried to attend a previous meeting, where able to attend. So your odds are improving!
President Zimmer has really enjoyed these meetings so they should continue in the future.

The University now invites registered degree-seeking students at the University of Chicago to apply for the position of 2008 – 09 Associate Student Ombudsperson. Applications are due no later than Monday, April 28 at 4:30pm. No late applications will be accepted.
Background
For 2008-09, Geertrui Spaepen, the current Associate Ombudsperson, has been appointed to the position of
Student Ombudsperson. The Student Ombudsperson and Associate Student Ombudsperson derive their authority from the University’s President, who appoints both positions. Together, they investigate complaints brought by students and attempt to resolve problems without superseding the regular remedial processes of the University. They work with appropriate offices or officials to suggest steps in settlement of individual complaints, call attention to systematic problems, and suggest consideration of changes in rules, procedures, or policies. The Ombudsperson and Associate Ombudsperson are provided with an office and a budget. (For more information, go to http://ombudsperson.uchicago.edu/.)
The Associate Ombudsperson handles individual cases under the direction of the Ombudsperson, and is expected to work an average of 10 hours per week during each of the three academic quarters of the 2008-09 academic year. Either or both the Ombudsperson and Associate Ombudsperson may choose to work in the
summer of 2008.
The University welcomes applications from both graduate and undergraduate students. Preference for the Associate Ombudsperson will be given to students who expect to spend at least two more years at the University. This allows for the possibility of continuity of office, should the Associate choose to apply and be selected to serve in the following year as Ombudsperson. We will evaluate each candidate’s qualifications with an emphasis on maturity, good judgment, independence, fairness, impartiality, extensive knowledge of the University, and strong writing skills. The Associate Ombudsperson selected should be available at the end of Spring Quarter, 2008, to receive training from the incumbent.
To Apply
If you are interested in applying for this position, please take the following two steps:
1. By Friday, April 18, indicate by email (to mrhammond@uchicago.edu) your interest in applying
for this position so that we may arrange a schedule for applicant interviews.
2. No later than Monday, April 28, submit a completed application to the Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students in the University, Room 227 of the Administration Building.
The application must include a cover letter, resume or Curriculum Vitae, and two recommendation letters. Application instructions and the recommendation forms can be obtained on the website of the Office of the Student Ombudsperson (http://ombudsperson.uchicago.edu/).
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

At last night’s community meeting in Hutch, the Alderwomen Leslie Hairston heard students and community members speak about whether there should be a bus stop on the SE Corner of University and 57th Street. In response to overwhelming community and student support for the stop, the Alderwomen agreed to keep the stop in place.
Recently, controversy flared when the stop’s existence was called into question when the Alderwomen threatened to move it because the CTA and University didn’t follow the proper steps in notifying her and allowing her to hold a community meeting on the issue (Maroon coverage here).
Student Government had a Townhall meeting last March to talk about the issue, where people mostly expressed their frustration and the move they felt was mostly arbitrary and capricious (coverage of the meeting here). Ironically, the Alderwomen’s response probably stemmed from a similar impression of the CTA and University’s actions which she saw as going around the the democratic process.
At the Community meeting yesterday people spoke about the need for more public transportation in Hyde Park and the concern that four parking spaces were worth more than 500 riders. Students spoke about the
vital link the stop provided to the Shoreland and Broadview. The Alderwomen, hearing the response from her constituents, agreed to keep the 171. Hooray!
