Resolution 2013.1 -- UCSC Advisory Board

Assembly of the University of Chicago Student Government, 7 November 2013

WHEREAS, in 1992, the University Community Service Center (UCSC) was founded out of student initiative as a student-run institution; and

 

WHEREAS, since then the UCSC has enabled students to pursue community service, social justice, and civic engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, such pursuits as the UCSC has supported enrich the intellectual discourse of the University through exposing students to a variety of organizations and community perspectives; and 

 

WHEREAS, both students and professors recognize the ethical importance of attending to the issues of the broader Chicago community through direct service work; and

 

WHEREAS, the continued investment of students in the UCSC will make it a stronger, more sustainable organization;

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that an Advisory Board consisting of students and faculty of the University of Chicago shall be created to advise the UCSC staff and director on matters relating to its overall mission, the programs it undertakes in accordance with that mission, and the staff it hires to execute those programs; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that eight students, comprised of two representatives selected from the Student Government Assembly who will report back to the Assembly, three representatives selected from Community Service Registered Service Organizations (CSRSOs), and three selected from the Student Association by application to the Executive Slate shall compose this Advisory Board; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that four members of the University of Chicago faculty shall be invited to sit on this Advisory Board; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the president of the Student Government, the Community and Government Liaison of the Student Government, and the Director of the UCSC shall sit as ex officio members of this Advisory Board; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Advisory Board shall take up the consideration of no issue if a quorum of half its members are not present at a meeting of this Board; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Board shall endeavor to meet no less than three times per academic quarter to aid in determining the objectives of the UCSC strategic plan, the development of UCSC programming, and the consideration of new staff members; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of this Advisory Board shall assist to maintain the diverse contacts in the Chicago community required for a vibrant community service center; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of this Advisory Board shall assist to connect the academic work of the University with the direct service, grassroots work of the UCSC, and any other form of community service the UCSC chooses to undertake.
